The Muzaffargarh District, in the south-west corner of the Punjab on the edge of the Rajputana Desert is known for its poverty. In the substantive and most interesting Foreword and Preface by the General Editor, J.W. Thomas, and the Deputy Commissioner, Nur Muhammad, who appears to have made substantive changes in Khan Abdur Rahim's original inquiry, some of the reasons for this poverty are pointed out including river floods, marriages between blood relations and Hindu money lenders.
