xxi+161 pages with 83 facsimile pages, and index. Royal Quarto (12 1/4" x 8 1/2") bound in full leather with red label to spine and gilt lettering. Original wrappers bound in. Translated from Nahuatl by Primo Feliciano Velazquez. From the library of George M Foster. Instituto Nacional de Antropologia e Historia (INAH), First series, number 1. 3d edition. One of the great documents of colonial Mexico, the Codex Chimalpopoca chronicles the rise of Aztec civilization and preserves the mythology on which it was based. Its two complementary texts, Anales of Cuauhtitlan and Legend of the Suns, record the pre-Cortesian history of the Valley of Mexico together with firsthand versions of that region's myths. Of particular interest are the stories of the hero-god Quetzalcoatl, for which the Chimalpopoca is the premier source. Two previous editions of the Annals have appeared. The first (1885) was bad and requires no comment. The second edition was made in German by Dr Walther Lohmann (1938). This third edition…

xviii+ 595 pages with frontispiece, diagrams, tables, appendixes, Egyptian-English vocabulary, English-Egyptian vocabulary and index. Quarto(11 1/4" x 9") bound in original publisher's blue cloth with gilt lettering to spine. From the library of George Gunn. First edition.
Egyptian Grammar: Being an Introduction to the Study of Hieroglyphs was written by Alan Gardiner and first published in 1927 in London by the Clarendon Press. It has been reprinted several times since. The third edition published in 1957 is the most widely used version for the subject. Through a series of thirty-three lessons, the book gives a very thorough overview of the language and writing system of Ancient Egypt. The focus of the book is the literary language of the Middle Kingdom. The creation of the book resulted in the development of an accurate and detailed hieroglyphic typeset, Gardiner's Sign List. Gardiner's work is considered to this day to be the most thorough textbook of the Egyptian language in existence, although subsequent developments have supplanted a number of aspects of Gardiner's understanding of Egyptian grammar, particularly with regard to the verbal system.
Battiscombe George Gunn (1883-1950) was a British Egyptologist who studied hieroglyphs at University College, London, as a student of Margaret Murray. He was assistant to Gardiner helping him with the lexicographical work on Onomastica. He excavated at various sites including Amarna, Haraga and Saqqara and was Assistant Curator at the Egyptian Museum, Cairo, 1928-31. He became Curator of Egyptian Antiquities at the University Museum, Philadelphia, 1931-4. He was professor of Egyptology, Oxford, 1934-50. Type written piece tipped in with his signature; his notes. drawings and marginalia through out text.
Condition:
Points rubbed through, spine ends and edges rubbed, some pages dog-eared, previous owner's name (not Gunn) on front end paper with date date 1932, darkening offset to title page, soiled, corners bumped. A good to very good copy issued without jacket of an association piece else a good to very good copy.

342+ix with fold out map. Folio (13" x 8 1/4") issued in original wrappers. First edition. There is an abundance of documentation concerning the history of indigenous populations of Mexico prior to the arrival of the Spaniards. These documents were constructed from information about the groups with whom the Spaniards had the most contact and focus on the life and governance of these groups. In comparison, relatively little is known of the hunters and gatherers that for most of the colonial period occupied a marginal position relative to the central political scheme. These peoples, located in the arid part of America, were relegated to colonization by religious missionary orders. The Spanish colonization machine with its array of bureaucrats and administrators was first established in the Mesoamerican region because of its geo-political importance as a central area for decision-making and development of the colonial society. What is commonly known as the Aztec Empire consisted of 38 provinces which paid…

Elephant folio (18" x 12") bound in quarter red leather with six raised band compartments lettered and decorated in gilt over marbled boards. Translated by Juan de Dios de la Rada and Delgado. First Spanish edition limited to 200 copies of which this is number 141.This Spanish-language translation of Rosny's essay on hieroglyphic writing is from the Codex Troano, which was named for a previous owner, Don Juan Tro and Ortolano, a professor of Spanish palaeography. In his prologue to this book, Juan Rada and Delgado endorses Rosny's assertion that the Maya codex purchased by a Madrid museum in 1875 and named Codex Cortesianus is truly part of the same book as the Codex Troano, which was discovered in Spain in the 1860s By Brasseur de Bourbourg. The two fragments were reunited in 1888, and the whole is now known as the Madrid Codex. The reconnected manuscript consists of fifty-six leaves,…

Octavo (8 1/4" x 5 1/2") volume one rebound in red leather with gilt lettering to spine; volume two original quarter leather with gilt lettering to spine over marbled boards. First editions. The first Mexican linguist worthy of this name is Francisco Pimentel, in the second half of the nineteenth century. He attempted to systematize what was known until then about the Indian languages of Mexico. His work is the starting-point for the development of a more scientific approach to linguistic studies on Mesoamerican languages. A scholar versed in European typology and comparative linguistic studies of the nineteenth century Pimentel is clearly indebted to his predecessor the Spaniard Lorenzo Hervas y Panduro, as well as Wilhelm von Humboldt, Friedrich Schlegel, Ernest Renan, Jacob Grimm and others. His work on linguistic classification in Mexico, unlike that of Orozco y Berra, was as up to date as that of any of his North American contemporaries. The second…

Some reprints, most first editions.Current Anthropology, whose first issue was launched in 1959, is one of the discipline's oldest and most distinguished journals, and has been sponsored since its founding by the Wenner-Gren Foundation. It became known for its innovative format that combined major research papers with responses solicited from the field. The format, now known as the "CA treatment" was unique in its time and was copied by other journals such as Behavioral and Brain Sciences. They called themselves The People, but to nearly everyone else in their world they were known as The Enemy. And they earned the name in every respect. Seldom has any people fought harder for the preservation of their territory and their way of life. We know them today as the Apache, an ancient people who, in historic times, made a prolonged and desperate effort to drive the Spanish, the Mexicans and finally the Anglo-Americans out of their ancestral lands. Unsuccessful, they were placed in four reservations, on or near their original ranges in Arizona and New Mexico, some of the most ruggedly beautiful land in this country. There most of them still live, accepting the White ways yet keeping many of the old…
