Published by B. T. Batsford, London, 1904. FIRST EDITION. Overall condition: Good. Front and back cover - light discoloration. Spine - small piece peeled off. Pages - very good. Contains 68 plates of measured drawings supplemented by 72 collotype reproductions of photographs.
Bailey Scott Murphy was born in 1876 and articled to Henry Francis Kerr from 1892 to 1897. While in that office he studied at Edinburgh School of Art, Heriot-Watt College and under Frank Worthington Simon and Stewart Henbest Capper at the School of Applied Art. He was awarded a travelling scholarship by the School of Applied Art and spent four months on a study tour in England. At the end of his apprenticeship he worked for Kinross & Tarbolton. The years 1902 to 1904 were spent on measuring historic ironwork in England and Scotland for his publication on the subject, and a further period of three months in 1904 sketching and measuring in England and France after which he moved to London to the office of Sir John W Simpson and Ormrod Maxwell Ayrton.
