by EPICTETUS

[Utrecht]: Ex officina Guilielmi Broedelet. 1711. Contemporary blind tooled vellum over boards (dust soiled; without end- papers) 4to . Important edition of Epictetus by Adriaan Reelant (1676- 1718) with the Latin version and interpretation of Marcus Meibom (1630- 1711) and annotations of Claude Saumaise (1588-1653); includes the first bibliography on this author. "This edition is a valuable and critical one. Relandus has given a catalogue of the various editions of Epictetus, which will be found useful to those who are desirous of completing their collections." (Dibdin) "Meibonius had had printed at Copenhagen an edition of the Encheiridion and of the Tablet of Cebes, but had taken all the copies with him to Amsterdam. Relandus, at the request of the book dealer who had bought the copies from the heirs after the death of Meibomius, brought out this edition with the use of the notes of Meibomius and other materials. ... The version of Meibomius was followed very closely by J. Upton ... and used in the Foulis ed. and its successors ... The principal services of Relandus were in preparing the excellent Index Editionum, the first of its kind for Epictetus and Cebes, and the valuable Index Vocum, making a few additional notes, and seeing the work through the press. This useful edition is frequently referred to as that of Meibomius, not without reason. According to Fabricius the Greek text of the Enchiridion follows that of D. Heinsius; according to Asmus the fragments are from the Schegkius Basel 1554 ed." (Oldfather) A very handsomely printed volume printed on a fine, thick paper. Hoffmann and Graesse note that folio size, 'large paper,' issue was also printed [20], 151, [1], 124, 152, [60] pp. Title printed in red and black; engraved vignette on title; woodcut headpieces and initials; parallel Greek and Latin text; a few minor damp marks in outer blank margins; some old annotations; printed on a fine, thick paper; owner's inscription on front paste-down "coll: perf: Heber Drury - Fine Paper - Harrow. 1834 ..." last part crossed out, later inscription ("R. Stuart") and a different hand, "This is called by Dr. Harwood the ed. opt." § Oldfather, Epictetus, no. 287; Hoffmann, II, p. 15; Graesse, II, p. 484; Dibdin, Classics, I, p. 515
