Newtown: The Gregynog Press, 1931. First Edition. hardcover. Some rubbing to the spine and joints with very small professionally repaired chip to the head; long vertical scratch to the front cover. Owner name on front endpaper; internally fresh and clean. A Very Good and scarce example of this beautiful book. Agnes Miller Parker. Quarto (8-1/4" x 12-1/4") in ochre levant morocco leather, top edge gilt, signed by George Fisher and William MacCance (the designer) at the Gregynog Press Bindery. The upper cover has three gilt rules, surrounding an inner rectangle outlined by multiple gilt rules of varying thickness, surrounding a design of onlaid russet morocco in which the letters of "Esope" are ingeniously intertwined. "The Fables of" is printed above that in blind, and "Caxton" below in gilt. The rear cover simply has three gilt rules and the letters "GG" on an onlay of russet morocco. The spine has five raised bands. Of a total of 250 copies, this is copy #14 of only 25 in this special binding. Illustrated throughout with wood engravings by Agnes Miller Parker resulting in a book now regarded as one of the most accomplished examples of wood-engraving between the Wars.

This book [No. 14/20] was subscribed for directly from The Gregynog Press by Ambassador William Castle Jr. (1878-1963). The book was published on 2 April 1932 for £12-12s-0d: (twelve guineas). Castle purchased his special copy on 20 July 1934 (there was always a delay between the publication date and the completion of the Special Bindings).
He owned a total of 14 of the Presss Special Bindings, as well as several copies of the ordinary (case) bindings. Castle purchased all his Gregynog Press books directly from the Press, commencing with THE MISFORTUNES OF ELPHIN which he bought in December 1929; his last was LYRICS AND UNFINISHED POEMS in May 1943. Castle did not purchase every book that the Press produced in the Special Bindings. A large part of his collection was sold at Samuel Freemans auction rooms in Philadelphia on 1 December 1971, but this copy was not included in that auction. There were several other Special Bindings that were not. It is believed that Castle gave away several of his Special Bindings as they were not included in the 1971 sale.

Moser's Alice joins the ranks of the earlier spectacular Alices: Tenniel, Rackham, Dali: not only do the 75 images dance and sprawl across the pages, but they reflect new visions of the text. These images range from marginalia to images merged into the text, to full page and on to two page spreads. The text is printed in black, with highlighted words in red or blue. Moser's signature is in purple, as is the limitation number, 157 of 350. The book is half bound in purple morocco with boards covered in a coordinating hand marbled paper, from the workshop of Gray Parrot. The type was cast and composed by Michael and Winifred Bixler. Further hand composition was done by Arthur Larson. Text and blocks were printed by Harold McGrath on Puligeum, a paper specially made for Pennyroyal by the Strathmore Paper Company. The clamshell case is quarter bound in morocco with cloth covered sides. The extra set of 75 prints, each signed by Moser, is enclosed in a matching cloth covered portfolio. He was a satirist, swordsmen, poet, and philosopher who indeed had a prodigious appendage. The book, excerpts of which are translated here under the title Journeys to the Moon and Sun, consist in equal parts of sci fi, philosophical speculation, metaphysical drama, theological humor, and freak show satire. Easthampton, MA: Cheloniidae Press, 1982. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. UNIQUE COPY WITH A SET OF THE 26 ORIGINAL PENCIL DRAWINGS BY ALAN JAMES ROBINSON. There were 300 copies of this book published; 200 were regular copies, 50 were deluxe copies with quarter leather binding and 50 others bound in full leather. The deluxe editions were issued with a set of proofs of the wood engravings and a set of proofs of the line-cut initials, with a large calligraphic manuscript initial beneath each image. The wood engraving proofs are lettered and signed by Robinson, and the line-cut proofs are signed both by Robinson and the calligrapher, Elizabeth Curtis. This copy shows some variation from the copies described in the prospectus. The colophon has been signed and numbered VI of L and internally seems to be a straightforward copy of the deluxe full leather edition. The binding varies somewhat from that pictured in the prospectus but uses many of the same elements. Also, the chemise is thicker that the regular… Read More

San Juan Capistrano, California:: Inkswine Press,, 2021.. Edition of 6. 29 aquatint etchings, woodcuts, chine collé, plus letterpress and screen printing. 15 x 11.5 inches, (38 x 29.25 cm) on 250 gm deckle edge rag paper, quarter case binding. Signed and numbered. Dirk Hagner: "The Lepidoptera series of 11 original prints roots in eastern and western sensibilities, and mythological notions of male-female attraction. It is realized by using gestural spontaneity and the graphic precision of printmaking. The project started with drawings for the woodcuts of the female figure, celebrated in art since the renaissance, and ink brush paintings for the making of aquatint lepidoptera (butterflies and moths) imagery. Asemic writing, printed from relief etchings, provide rhythmic compositional counterpoints. The addition of wood type letterpress outside the chine collé image area expands the visual to the entire page while the rich flat black screen-printed strips at its boundaries… Read More

Description:
San Francisco: Grabhorn Press, 1930 One of 175 regular copies. Twenty-five special copies privately printed for Herbert Rothschild were also produced. This particular copy shares some characteristics with the twenty-five special copies (which were produced before the regular copies). First, the date on the title page is given as 1383 (instead of 1483) in this copy, which is a printing error shared with the Rothschild copies only, as the error was corrected before the regular edition left the shop. In addition, both this copy and the Rothschild copies have three terminal blanks, as opposed to two in the regular copies. This copy was apparently given by Grabhorn to Leslie McMurtry on the same day as a copy of A Lytell Geste of Robyn Hode and His Meiny (Grabhorn Press, 1932), also unnumbered and with an inscription to McMurtry dated June 9, 1932. We could not locate any information on McMurtry. . Original reddish-brown leather with gilt title and five raised bands on spine. . Octavo. Illustrated… Read More

Captain Nicolas Baudin's early 19th-century voyage of scientific discovery to Australia is a little-known event in French and Australian history. Yet that voyage played an important part in the history of Australian and Pacific colonization, and in the long story of worldwide scientific exploration. Departing Le Havre in 1800, Baudin's expedition comprised two ships--the Naturaliste and the Géographe--and 238 men, including 22 scientists. For most of the next three-and-a half years they travelled along the western and southern coasts of Australia, charting the coastline and… Read More
