An American doctor, Bethel Fleming was a founding member of the United Mission to Nepal, an interdenominational organization, and the first Western physician allowed to practice in Nepal, and her ornithologist husband, Robert Leland Fleming (1905- ) return to Nepal and establish its first modern hospital, Shanta Bhawan.
