Description:
Other than a neatly written signature on the end page, this is a tight, sound and unmarked copy-The guild on the spine has faded through time-" Pearl Comfort Sydenstricker Buck Walsh (Pearl S. Buck) was a bestselling and Nobel Prizewinning author. Her classic novel The Good Earth (1931) was awarded a Pulitzer Prize and William Dean Howells Medal. Born in Hillsboro, West Virginia, Buck was the daughter of missionaries and spent much of the first half of her life in China, where many of her books are set. In 1934, civil unrest in China forced Buck back to the United States. Throughout her life, she worked in support of civil and women's rights and established Welcome House, the first international, interracial adoption agency. In addition to her highly acclaimed novels, Buck wrote two memoirs and biographies of both of her parents. For her body of work, Buck was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1938, the first American woman to have done so. She died in Vermont."Minor soiling on rear cover.

New York.: Reynal & Hitchcock.. 1936.. 302pp,foxing endpapers, a prior owner's inscription front free endpaper, dustjacket chipped with loss and repaired on reverse with paper, good hardback copy. Biography of Pearl Buck's missionary father and his life in China. "Companion volume to 'The Exile', a biography of the author's mother, 'Fighting Angel' is a biography of her father. The extraordinary fact is that while these two lived together for forty years and had seven children, yet they lived utterly separate lives, so that the tale of what the man did and thought does not in the least duplicate the story of the woman." - Dustjacket blurb. .
