Brown called himself "architect and professor of perspective" dedicated his book to Soane, and seems to have been a friend of Soane's draughtsman Gandy. He exhibited at the Royal Academy 1804-1828, showing a design for Regent's park in 1812 and military buildings for the Gold Coast in 1818. Re-spined in brown calf with decorative panels with red morrocco title panel. Slight transference to the verso of some of the plates, but the pages are generally clean. edges a little wavy, and boards very rubbed. . Very Good. Half Calf. First Edition. 1815.

Leather attached a bit awkwardly at spine ends, marbled boards rubbed and worn, edges of front board discolored from old tape removal, but binding solid, edges nicked on a few leaves, scattered foxing mainly affecting the margins, plates sharp, colors bright, a quite useful copy.. Very good set of this fine British flora, the first to rival James Sowerby's English Botany from 1791. Complete with 509 hand-coloured copperplates engraved by Charles Mathews after botanical illustrations by Mathews, Isaac Russel (an Oxford glass painter) and William Alfred Delamotte. The plates were reputedly hand-coloured by Baxter's daughters and daughter-in-law. George Claridge Druce in The Flora of Berkshire, 1897, writes, "The plates of this work, although of unequal merit, are in many cases very excellent and possess a special value, because each figure is drawn from an individual plant, the locality or origin of which is usually stated."First issued in parts from 1832, and later in book form from 1834.
