New York: Macmillan, 1936. First edition. Fine/Fine. First printing, May 1936, in first issue jacket. A Fine copy, signed by the author on the front end paper. The book is just about perfect with a bright yellow topstain, square binding and tight hinges, completely unread. Very slight discoloration to the cloth, mostly at the spine. Fine dust jacket is bright and unworn with only the slightest wear at the corners and base of the spine. Price clipped from lower corner of front flap and one 1/4 inch closed tear on the rear panel. Both book and jacket completely untouched by any repair or restoration. A spectacular copy complete with the author's distinctive signature. The last comparable copy we can recall was the Bruce Kahn copy (offered for $55,000 in 2009).The basis for the critically acclaimed, 1939 film starring Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. Mitchell managed to create a book that is both an engaging romance (without being sentimental) as well as a sympathetic portrayal of the devastation to the Southern way of life in the wake of the Civil War. No other work of literature more fully captures the old Southern gentility than "Gone With the Wind." "This is beyond a doubt one of the most remarkable first novels produced by an American writer.
