Description:
New York: R. Worthington, 1881. I have only been able to locate three other copies of this book in this country, one in the University of Louisville Library, one in the Florida State Library, and one in my own library that I am offering in a separate listing. However, there might be some copies in private hands. "Sunday Chatterbox" is an oversized children's book, measuring 7 5/8 by 10 inches. The book is unpaginated. It is in Good+ condition. The stories, poems, and songs for children are both secular and religious (bible stories). So why is this collectable? Not only due to its rarity, but because of the 90 gorgeous pen-and-ink drawings found throughout. (I suspect that other copies no longer exist because they've been cut up and their illustrations sold as individual prints.) These are also both secular (centering on children) or religious (illustrating bible stories). All are suitable for framing. (Interested buyers should email me and I will send them sample illustrations…

London: Collins, 1944. First British Edition . Decorative Cloth. Good/No Jacket. 28 x 22 Cms (11" x 8.5"). PUBLISHING DETAILS: A rare first UK edition of Roald Dahl's first book, written, supposedly "from the Walt Disney production", to aid the RAF Royal Benevolent Fund when he was Flight Lieutenant Roald Dahl. Published by Collins of London in 1944. 46 pages, unpaginated. Size; 28 x 22 cms (11" x 8.5"). Weight; 430g (15 ozs). CONDITION: I would rate this notoriously fragile bookas good only. The original UK covers, with coloured illustration to the front only, are lightly age-soiled, with wear to all extremities, especially the corners (see photo) and some marks to the back. The binding remains secure and tight, save that the staples used in this binding are visible at the back pastedown. The text is generally clean, with the odd finger-mark, and the wonderful full colour illustrations are particularly bright and vibrant. All in all, a still splendid copy of this highly collectable first from the great Roald Dahl. THE BOOK: 'The Gremlins' was written for Walt Disney, optioned for a film that was never made, in part because no one could establish exactly who owned the word "gremlin" and in part because they could not figure out how to make creatures who destroyed Allied aircraft lovable enough for a cartoon. The story concerns mischievous little mythical creatures, the gremlins of the title, that were often used by Royal Air Force pilots as an explanation for mid-air mechanical troubles and mishaps. In Dahl's book, the gremlins' motivation for sabotaging British planes is the destruction of their home, a forest, which was flattened to make way for an aircraft factory. The principal character in the book, Gus, has his plane destroyed over the English Channel by a gremlin, but is able to convince the gremlin as they parachute into the water that they should join forces against a common enemy - Hitler and the Nazis - rather than fight each other. Eventually, the gremlins are re-trained by the Royal Air Force to help repair, rather than sabotage, aircraft, and they also help restore Gus to active flight status after a particularly severe crash. This was a kind of autobiographical reference for Dahl, who had flown as a lieutenant in the RAF, and was barred from flying after serious injuries sustained in a crash landing in Libya. He later returned to flying. Used copies of the first edition book are highly prized and sought after by collectors of both Roald Dahl's works and Disney's. (Source: Wikipedia)

Description:
New York: Random House,, 1943. First edition, first printing, of the author's first book. As noted by the original jacket blurb, "Everybody has heard about the gremlins, the fantastic Little People whose antics have become one of the great legends of the R.A.F." The book was written as a promotional device for a feature-length Disney animation that was never produced, partly because the studio could not establish firm copyright in the "gremlin" characters (Dahl claimed to have invented them, though they had been common currency in the RAF and had appeared in print at least once before) and partly because the British Air Ministry wanted final approval of the script and production. It was eventually agreed that royalties would be split between the RAF Benevolent Fund and Dahl. The book is described on the title and the front cover as being "From the Walt Disney Production"; the Disney studio wrote to Dahl in August 1943 after publication cancelling any further preproduction work. Quarto. Original…

Collins London nd [1943 or 1944]. First Edition. Softcover. Very Good/No Jacket. A rare Proof copy of Dahl's first work. Original plain brown wrappers. Contents appears to be the same as for the final published UK first except the endpapers (with the correct red and yellow illustrations) are included as four leaves (2 front and rear) rather than pasted to the hard covers. The last text leaf has some colouring in to the black and white illustrated characters, seemingly with water based paint, several other leaves have very faint occasional pencil shading, but generally the condition is extremely good, with solid bright illustrations. The paper wrappers have a chip to the foot of the spine and minor creasing.A rare proof, distributed by the publisher to families with children to test market the book. Possibly only a dozen or so were made up.
