Chicago and New York: Rand, McNally & Co, 1896. Book. Illus. by Folding Map in Color, Plus Illustrations and Bicycle Adverts.. Very Good. Cloth. First Edition. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Red cloth on thin boards, in the style of Baedeker travel guides. Bright gilt title on the front board. No edgewear, spine is some dulled, with neat repairs to the spine ends. Bicycles were the new fad when this was published, and "wheelman" in the title refers to bicyclists. Very interesting advertisements for bicycles and accessories. Scarce. No other copies on the internet at this writing. The folding map is in color, measures 24 inches by 36 inches. It is intact, with lots of careful repairs on the verso, but it is fragile..

Description:
London: Bemrose & Sons , 1881. Hardcover. Fair/No Jacket (as published). 5.5" X 8.5. 39pp., A classic study on the origins of place names in the English county of Derbyshire. This copy has had a tough life, the spine strip is missing and both hinges are weak. The pages themselves are all soundly bound. The book includes some related ephemera, including a letter and several newspaper cuttings, mainly from the 1920s. (Includes the author's obituary). Some cuttings are stuck to the pages, but all text is still quite readable. There is the signature of a previous owner (William S Longbottom) at the top of the title page. William Longbottom was better known by his pen name of Horace Weir, the author of many works on the history of Derbyshire. Please note that this is a 19th century produced copy and not a modern reproduction. All orders processed and shipped promptly from the UK, usually within 24 hours. Please call or email with your questions about this book. Not available for…
