Hints to Company Officers on Their Military Duties

New York: D. Van Nostrand, 1863. First Edition. 18mo (6"x4"). One of the rarest books on Civil War leadership and the responsibilities of Company officers. The principal portion of this work was written while the author was confined as a prisoner of war in the State of Georgia, and contains, in a small compass, a large amount of information to Company Officers which can not be found in the "Regulations." An officer can not fail to be better qualified for a command after a careful perusal of its pages. Andrews served with the Third Regiment Minnesota Infantry, U.S. Volunteers, rising from his role as Lt. Colonel at Vicksburg to full Colonel at Fitzhugh's Woods and finally to Brigadier General at Pine Bluff. In 1865 he was assigned to the command of the Second Division of the VIII Corps and participated in the siege of Fort Blakely and then finished his role in command of the Mobile division where he was brevetted Major General. 68pp., (16)pp ads at rear. bound in red cloth lettered in gilt, spine blank but with a partial homemade paper label, brown coated endpapers, a bit of toning to page edges, foxing to preliminaries, a few very tiny nicks to spine and some soiling to covers, contemporary owner's name, otherwise a very good copy of this exceedingly rare work locating no auction records and not in Nevins.
