Author's first book, a fantasy classic. Lonely schoolmaster in the Upper Congo unwittingly teaches his pet chimp to read. She devours the English classics and begins to exhibit the softer virtues of Victorian womanhood, but when the chimp gets a rival for the schoolmaster's affections she starts reading "Murders in the Rue Morgue." Collier is wonderfully pleasant and amusing late night reading, especially if you're fond of vivid dreams. *Bleiler* 394.
