The War with Catiline, also known as the Catiline (Latin: De coniuratione Catilinae or Bellum Catilinae) is the first story published by the Roman historian Salustius. It is a chronicle of the attempt to overthrow the Roman rule taken by Catiline in 63 BC, probably written between 44 and 40 BC, 20 years after the events described. The story begins with a short introduction about the nature of man, history, and the short autobiography of Salustius himself. Later, the historian describes Catiline himself and presents his political ambitions. According to Salustius, Catiline is an enemy of law, order, and morality. It is a model of all the behaviors that the writer considers to be disastrous for Rome.

Full polished calf, the backs richly gilt with red and green morocco labels lettered in gilt, marbled end papers, top edges gilt, gilt inner dentelles, frontispiece engraved portrait Vol. I. Near Fine, scant rubbing to boards, a quite lovely set. With 2 pp. typed scholar's notes on Hearne's biography, one page tipped at front end page Vol. I, the other page laid in. Small seller's label rear end pages. Thomas Hearne (1678 -1735) was an English historian and antiquarian whose editions of English medieval chronicles were important sources for later historians.. London: Longman, Hurst, Rees, Orme, and Brown, 1816. Originally published in Vienna in a journal entitled Mines de l'Orient, this second edition printed in London in 1816 has been nicely rebound in 1/4 calf with gilt titling and marble boards. Bookplate on front pastedown and biographical entry on Rich taped to new front endpaper. Original pages and plates all in very good condition. 67 pp. 3 plates. Photos are of the actual book you will receive. Ships wrapped in bubble wrap and packed securely in a box.

Very good- set of 51 Roman landscape plates in the original paper wraps.In the early 19th century, Italian publishers rushed to bring out collections of views of Rome for the tourist market.Engraved title page with vignette of the Capitoline Wolf and different title, Raccolta delle Principali Veduti di Roma e suoi Contorni, 50 copperplate engravings of ancient Roman ruins and modern scenes drawn by famous artists and engraved on copper by Alessandro Moschetti.Views include the Trevi Fountain, Saint Peter's Square, Spanish Steps, the Vatican, exterior and interior of the Pantheon and the Colosseum, plazas, temples, triumphal arches, cathedrals, etc.Alessandro Moschetti (or Mochetti) was active in Rome from 1843-1864 and engraved many books of Roman views.Oblong quarto, original green printed wraps with some loss on spine, covers grubby, good impressions of the copperplates, a few with light foxing within the plate.
