Water stain visible on lower corner blank fep and up to title page of book (three pages, nothing obscured) The author has dedicated this book to "The Queen" (Victoria) and named the "Albert N'yanza in memory of the late illustrious and lamented Prince Consort" (Albert) 499 pages including index with some tanning. Separation inside front and back hinges. Color map of The Albert N'yanza has been mended with tape in one spot and has an inch tear along fold in another spot. Every page has a beautifully decorated engraved border: angels, cherubim, seraphim at the top and an open bible centered among flourishes at the bottom. There are also several hundred full page black and white engraved illustrations. Dark brown endpapers. Covers are brown cloth with bevelled edges. They are decorated with gilt titles and illustrations and black decorations. Ingram Cobbin (1777 - 1851) was an English minister. The city of Lawrence, Massachusetts was named for his brother, Abbott Lawrence. Following his retirement Amos Lawrence was a philanthropist on a tremendous scale donating to education, libraries and healthcare in particular. (Not to be confused with his son Amos A. Lawrence, himself a businessman and philanthropist and also a leading abolitionist and the founder of Lawrence, Kansas.) Philadelphia: Parry & McMillan, 1857. Prose Writers of America was first published in 1847 (this is the 4th and last edition.) And was specifically designed to compete with a similar anthology by Cornelius Mathews and Evert Augustus Duyckinck. Editor/author Rufus Wilmot Griswold was an influential editor but less than civil and scrupulous, he outed Walt Whitman (although apparently it took one to know one) and is perhaps best remembered today for defaming Egdar Allan Poe, even becoming Poe's literary executor under less than ethical circumstances. New York: E.P. Dutton, 1900. This is a very rare edition published in 1900. Narrow 12mo size pictorial hardcover with bright gilt titles on spine and front cover; 160 pages. Phillips Brooks (1835 - 1893) was an Episcopal clergyman and Rector at Boston's Trinity Church. Well known during his lifetime, he delivered a sermon at the funeral of United States President Abraham Lincoln. He was a requested speaker worldwide and delivered a sermon at Westminster Abbey. He was elected the sixth Bishop of Massachusetts in 1891 and served in that capacity until his death. Bishop Brooks is remembered in the Episcopal liturgical calendar on January 23. Several schools were named in his honor as was the Phillips Brooks House (now the Phillips Brooks House Association, a student volunteer association) at Harvard College, his alma mater.
