Marbled endpapers. Title page, Almanacke and calendar printed in red and black. Title, last page and old ffep cropped and laid down. Includes genealogical table and Garden of Eden engraving. A few early pages with marginal losses. Loss to lower corner of leaf 1 affecting 4 lines of text. Closed tear with old repair to 435 and 509 (OT), and to 20 and 107 (NT). Occasional stain to margin and a few pages with bleaching of ink, otherwise pages very bright and clean. With the separate title pages to Psalter, Apocrypha and New Testament complete. Small ink inscription to verso of Apocrypha title and to margin of Psalter and New Testament titles. Z5 (137) cropped and mounted in old repair. Colophon present. Z6 (final blank) lacking. Bound in later (possibly 19th Century) full dark brown calf with geometric decorations to boards and spine. Spine with 5 raised bands and red morocco spine label with gilt title. Old spine repair with original spine neatly relaid. Light wear to edges and slight rounding to corners. Herbert 188. ESTCS156. The only edition after 1572 to contain the Psalter of the 1568 folio Bishops version rather than the BCP version. An excellent copy of this rare Bible.

Description: There are several clippings pertaining to this edition of the Bible mounted on the front pastedown. Printed general title page (1743) laid down with loss to the lower border and imprint, which have been replaced in facsimile. Ornamental headpiece at the beginning of Genesis. Text in two column black letter, with cross references and short summaries at the beginning of each chapter. The text is based on Martin Luther's version by way of the 34th edition of the Halle Bible, with books three and four Esra and three Maccabees supplied from the Berlenburg Bible. The present copy has "parallelen" spelled correctly (a second issue of the title had this word misspelled as "parllelen" as it was made in haste.) Printed New Testament title page (1743).… Read More

Noteworthy Bible History instructional, adapted for the understanding of everyday people and the young. First published in England during the latter part of the 18th century under the title "An Abridgment Of The Holy Scriptures," it was widely disseminated in both Britain and on the Continent, and by 1814 had undergone 15 editions. Authored by William Sellon (1730-1790), revered curate of St. James, Clerkenwell from 1767 until his death, who was much esteemed for his personal integrity and power as a lecturer. Volume bound in brown leather with raised bands on the spine, stamped in blind front and back, metal clasp, and metal Star of David (enameled in blue and green and with the letters "IHS" in the center in gold), inner dentelles in gilt. All edges gilt over red, coated brown endpapers. The covers are lightly rubbed, and there is an owner name on the front blank page. Although the book has been well used, it is not badly worn.
