In 1920 he stole some pearls from a jewelry store, sentenced to 8 years of hard labor in the penal colony of French Guiana, (sometimes referred to as Devil's Island). Belbenoit was a constant thorn in the sides of French officials attempting to escape 4 times and doing so successfully on the 5th try, he escaped to the USA where he opened a diner.
