Description:
Moscow: Molodaya Gvardia, 1964. First Russian Book Edition. 351,[1] pp., with several in-text illustrations. Cloth-backed pictorial paper over boards. Early Russian ink inscription and inkstamp on rear pastedown. A few small scribbles in blue ink on covers and ink stains on cloth. Edges of boards lightly worn, front hinge cracked. Contents lightly toned, but surprisingly fresh for the quality of the paper. A good copy. The pirated first Russian book edition, after a 1963 appearance in the periodical INOSTRANAYA LITERATURA ("Foreign Literature") and a 1964 special separate issue of ROMAN-GAZETA ("Novel as Newspaper"). Like other books by foreign authors published in the USSR at the time, this edition is a piracy, with no royalties paid to the author. Nevertheless, it was a major undertaking, engaging major Russian literary talents of the day, with the still-authoritative translation by Nora Gal (1912-1991) and Raisa Oblonskaya (1924-2010), an introduction by celebrated literary critic Raisa Orlova…

Description:
Eyre & Spottiswoode, London, 1951. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. The first UK edition (first printing) of the author's first book. 8vo. 499pp. Beige cloth lettered in red at the spine. Backstrip and upper edges of the boards lightly spotted. Endpapers partially browned and with some additional light spotting which also impacts several preliminary and (blank) concluding leaves. A very good copy in very good non-price-clipped pictorial dust wrapper designed by Stein, with just a touch of spotting and tanning, several tiny closed tears and several slivers of loss from the spine panel ends. First published by Harcourt Brace in the US in March 1950, this distinctly more uncommon UK edition followed a year later. The novel was not a success: it was trashed by a number of reviewers, Kerouac's royalties did not exceed his advance of $1,000 and it was six years before the publication of his next novel, 'On the Road'..

Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York, 1940; First Edition; 8vo, 471 pages; publisher’s beige cloth; black spine titles over a red field. Hemingway’s dramatic semi-autobiographical tale of fate, courage, and death in the Spanish Civil War, released to considerable critical acclaim and recommended for the 1941 Pulitzer prize, though none was awarded that year. Source of the 1943 Oscar nominated film directed by Sam Wood starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman. Hemingway dedicated the book to comrade, paramour, and energetic war correspondent Martha Gellhorn, whom he married the following year. Very Good, pastedown margins lightly tanned, clean, crisp, corners sharp, binding tight, sound, and square, no ownership signatures or any other markings of any kind. Second issue dust jacket with photographer Lloyd Arnold’s credit beneath the rear panel photo, publisher’s price of $2.75, and Henry Seidel Canby blurb on front flap. Chicago: Consolidated Book Publishers, 1942. Hardcover. Fine. First edition, first issue. Page edges a little browned as usual, a bit of rubbing to the boards, else about fine in papercovered boards (without dustwrapper as issued) and in the rare original illustrated shipping carton, which shows evidence of having been mailed, but is otherwise in about fine condition. This book of cartoons and short stories was intended to be shipped to fighting men away from home. Salinger's story represents his first appearance in a commercial book. Both issues are very uncommon in the original carton, the first issue much more so than the second.

Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process.
