Leipzig: Bernard Tauchnitz, April, 1922. Vol No.4112. Copyright edition 1909. Small 8vo. Lady Windermere's Fan, A Play About a Good Woman is a four-act comedy by Wilde, first performed on Saturday, 20 February 1892, at the St James's Theatre in London. The story concerns Lady Windermere, who suspects that her husband is having an affair with another woman and she confronts him with it.
Oscar Fingal O'Flahertie Wills Wilde (1854 - 1900) was an Irish poet and playwright. After writing in different forms throughout the 1880s, he became one of the most popular playwrights in London in the early 1890s. He is best remembered for his epigrams and plays, his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, and the circumstances of his criminal conviction for gross indecency for consensual homosexual acts in "one of the first celebrity trials", imprisonment, and early death from meningitis at age 46. Bernhard Freiherr von Tauchnitz (1816-1895), the founder of the firm of Bernhard Tauchnitz, was the nephew of Karl Christoph Traugott Tauchnitz (1761 - 1836). His printing and publishing firm was started at Leipzig in 1837. Bernhard started the Collection of British and American Authors, a reprint series familiar to anglophone travellers on the continent of Europe. These inexpensive, paperbound editions, a direct precursor to mass-market paperbacks, was begun in 1841, and eventually ran to over 5000 volumes. Tauchnitz editions were more often than not published at the same time as the true first, many with the injunction that they should not be introduced into the British Empire or the USA for copyright reasons. In a number of recorded cases, and no doubt many unrecorded ones, the Tauchnitz editions were published slightly in advance of the UK editions, making them the true worldwide first edition.
