London, England: Weidenfeld and Nicolson, 1976. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. 272 pp. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Inscribed by Koestler on the front free endpaper: 'We shall have to wait and see... A.K. ". Although not named, this book was inscribed to Koestler's friend, British bibliophile, scholar and auctioneer Anthony Hobson. With Hobson's bookplate on the inside front cover. Includes a chapter by Arthur Koestler entitled "Whereof one cannot speak...?" and other contributions by Arnold Toynbee, Cottie A. Burland, Adrian Boshier, Crispin Tickell, Geoffrey Parrinder, Rosalind Heywood and others. Given Koestler's death by suicide in 1983 and his support for the cause of voluntary euthanasia, the subject matter of the book and its inscription render this a particular significant copy. Laid- in are 6 equally intriguing pieces of Koestler-related ephemera: a) The Royal Academy of Arts 'A Meeting to Honour the Memory of Arthur Koestler and Cynthia Koestler Thursday 7 April, 1983' memorial service booklet (with an intact copy of Koestler's suicide letter laid-in the booklet); b) Invitation to Koestler's memorial service. [Although not marked as such, both the invitation and the Memorial Service booklet belonged to Koestler's friend Anthony Hobson; c) Koestler's original obituary in The Times March 4, 1983; d) Two articles on Koestler in The Times accompanying the obituary; e) Original Sunday Times October 23 1976 review of this book. An important book with a significant essay by Arthur Koestler; a significant inscription to a close friend of his and important ephemera. This copy would make an absolutely superb addition to any Arthur Koestler collection. Please see other unique signed and association Arthur Koestler copies we have in stock. Offered for sale by Come By Chance Books- a small, family-run bookshop in beautiful Niagara on the Lake.

Chicago and New York: M.A. Donohue & Co., 1932. SIGNED AND INSCRIBED at front end page - "The great 'Beyond' and other places South of Hoboken- Beer and Skittles Alan Innes-Taylor" and "From one deep-sea diver to another Charles L. Kessler" and additionally SIGNED AND INSCRIBED at half-title page -"The top of the world with City of New York Wm. W. Darling", along with rubber-stamped "Byrd's South Pole Ship / A Century of Progress / 1933". The author lists Kessler as seaman and helmsman, Innes-Taylor as dog-man and chief in handling and attending to the health and well-being of the sled dogs. Darling is described as a fireman and a hard worker, and "The City of New York" was Byrd's flagship for the expedition. A great ASSOCIATION COPY, given the personalization of the inscriptions seemingly presented to a fellow expedition member, who almost certainly is Dr. Dana Coman, medical director on the expedition, as this title came with 2…
