The Life of Henry the Fift (single leaf, First Folio)

Original leaf from the Shakespeare First Folio. The Life of Henry the Fift.

This is an original leaf salvaged from a derelict copy of the First Folio, printed in London in 1623. It has been estimated that there exist but 232 copies (of some 750 printed) of the First Folio, many incomplete. Wickipedia has a very good, brief history of the First Folio and I highly recommend it as a good overview if you are not already familiar with the book. I have been an antiquarian book dealer since about 1975 and although I have had material (including complete plays) from the Fourth Folio I have never, until now, had any material from the First Folio or the Second Folio. I know of no other leaves from these folios that are in dealer inventories (except the few that some dealers have bought from me). The collection of leaves I acquired was assembled in 1901/02. This may be a unique opportunity to acquire a leaf from one of the most important books in English.

This leaf measures 8 x 12 inches (appx. 20.5 x 31 cm)

The text is complete and perfectly legible. The leaf is age toned and stained with some minor creasing. This leaf does not have a watermark. It was compared to the same leaf in the Brandeis copy to ascertain correct folio.

There are many typographical errors in the Folio and these differ from book to book. The text apparently was proofread while the book was in production. The Folio was assembled from gatherings of six leaves.

Description:
1667 HERBAL Castore Durante Hebario Nuovo Plants Medicine Illustrated Mattioli

Castore Durante was a 16th-century Italian scholar who is best-remembered for his major work "Hebrario Nuovo". This work, which was first published in 1585, is a collection of descriptions of plants and their medical uses and healing properties. The plants detailed in this work were from Europe and the East and West Indies with information on how to identify them in their indigenous environment. According to Hunt,
"This was a popular Italian herbal that was reprinted in Italian, and translated and published in several other languages, for a number of years. The plant descriptions are written in the form of poems which Arber describes as 'pleasingly unscientific"

This highly coveted and desirable 1667 edition is extremely valuable much in part to the numerous in-text woodcuts in the style of Mattioli.

Description:
A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). Each work has a separate title page or a large heading, and retains the dedications etc written when they were first published. The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147. The fourth is Job Militant with half title page, proposition, dedication and text running to p 231. The fifth is the History of Sampson with no title page but starting with 'To the Reader' and text to p 232. The sixth is Sion's Sonnets… Read More
