The introduction gives a fascinating biography of Hannah Maynard and her family as well as a good historical view of Victoria and British Columbia in the latter half of the nineteenth century. The introduction occupies the first fifteen pages of the book the balance being devoted to the photographs, most of which are accompanied by a good caption. Maynard was a woman with an incredible eye for the aesthetic and the unusual. Signed by the author to the title page..
