London: Tho. Sawbridge & Will. Birch. 1675. 2nd edition. hb. Tall 4to, This is "The Second Edition, Corrected and amended". . The title continues: "Divided into two parts: the first, containing the life of Our Blessed Lord & Saviour Jesus Christ, with the lives of the ancient fathers, school-men, first-reformers, and modern divines: the second, containing the lives of Christian emperors, kings and soveriegn princes: whereunto are added the lives of inferiour Christians, who have lived in these latter centuries: and lastly, are subjoyned the lives of many of those, who by their vertue and valor obtained the sir-name of Great, divers of which, give much light to sundry places of Scripture, especially to the prophecies concerning the four monarchs: Together With the Lively Effigies of the most eminent of them cut in Copper." With portraits engraved on copper, rubricated first letters, head and tail pieces. A few of the initial portraits have been hand coloured. Some early "copperplate" handwriting on opposite sides of a few of the portraits. This copy lacks the first 24 unpaginated pages containing the title page and introductory remarks. The first numbered leaf (pages 1/2) lacks the top half of the page. The remaining text is complete, except for the last five printed pages of the book. Pagination of our copy: pp. 27, [5], 504, [4], [8], 116, [4], 104, [4], 298. Pages 123 to 126, and 163 to 168 mis-numbered. The margins of some portions of the text have been closely trimmed. Our copy has been freshly re-bound in half leather over green cloth, with matching green leather spine label, with new endpapers; now a very handsome presentation of this scarce and important work. .

1690 1ed Secret History Charles II James II England Catholic Protestant English
At the end of the 17th-century, numerous anti-Catholic pamphlets and propaganda were published being very critical of the reigns of Kings Charles II and James II. This particular book, "The Secret History of the Reigns of Charles II and James II", was written by an anonymous author, though modern scholarship attributes it to John Phillips or Robert Burton. The author provides important context on the British throne and the political and religious battles between Protestants and Catholics.
