London: printed for J. Moxon...and Tho. Tuttell, 1701. 1700-1701 (first title page not dated). The desirable third edition with the additional 'The Description and Explanation of Mathematical Instruments', (including the fabulous, large folding engraved plate of mathematical instruments) "also printed for J. Moxon...and Tho. Tuttell" and 1701, with separate title page, pagination and register; pp. [24], 191, [15 - advertisements], [2 blanks], [4], 22; 5 engraved plates of which 3 folding (this copy bound without the portrait frontispiece). Later half brown calf binding with gilt lettering to the spine, marbled paper covered boards, very good with slight wear only. Contents good and tight, slight loss to the base of the title page of the first work, just affecting a few words of the publishers' address and rulled border to the tail and bottom left edge, a little water staining to the title page and first 6, or so, leaves of the prelims. Generally margins very good, several catchwords/page nos. shaved where pages not centred. We have not been able to ascertain the correct number of plates for these two works but the first work has one folding plate of definitions and the second work a single plate and two folding plates including the impressive plate of mathematical instruments mentioned above. This third edition appears to be very scarce and we have only been able to find one auction result in the last twenty years or so, and that for a copy sold by Sotheby's, London on the 14th April 2005 for £1,800. (Wing M3008; Taylor, Tudor and Stuart 540). Third Edition. Half Calf. Very Good. 12mo (11 x 17.0cm).

Description:
1st Edition. FIRST EDITIONS IN MINT CONDITION AND IN ORIGINAL WRAPS of Abraham Wald's seminal work on sequential tests of statistical hypotheses. Before Wald, the traditional style of statistical decision was to posit a hypothesis, make a predetermined number of measurements, then make a decision whether to accept or reject the hypothesis. Wald realized that this procedure is quite wasteful, and that many measurements could be saved if given the option to decide at every step whether to continue or stop the measurement process. "According to Wald, the resulting ‘sequential probability ratio test frequently results in a savings of about 50 percent in the number of observations over the most efficient test procedure based on a fixed number of observations" (Gass, An Annotated Timeline of Operations Research, 65). In these papers Wald, known now as "the father of sequential analysis and decision theory," first presents the theoretical foundations of the theory of sequential analysis. The ideas he put… Read More

Discounted for final fair hours!San Jose, CA: Billiken Press, 1971. First Edition. Paperback. Very good. Softcover 4to, 44pp. No date, but an article about the book appears in the Dec 3, 1971 San Jose State "Spartan Daily" newspaper. Adhesive remainder to the upper left cover, mild rubbing and edgewear. Previous owner's signature on the title page, else unmarked. Great '70s graphic design and illustrations. Developed while Goldberg was a grad student at SJS to make sturdy geometrical models that "combine techniques from the mathematics and art classroom." Patterns are included to make a equilateral tetrahedron, equilateral hexahedron, isosceles hexahedron, cube, octahedron, decahedron, icosahedron, twenty-four triangular hedron, and concave hedron. Goldberg published a more popular variation of the book in 1977, without Sellars (misspelled "Sellers" on the title page). The newer "Pholdit" featured simpler shapes and was marketed toward a more general audience for "family fun." Scarce.
