Moscow: Molodaya Gvardia, 1964. First Russian Book Edition. 351,[1] pp., with several in-text illustrations. Cloth-backed pictorial paper over boards. Early Russian ink inscription and inkstamp on rear pastedown. A few small scribbles in blue ink on covers and ink stains on cloth. Edges of boards lightly worn, front hinge cracked. Contents lightly toned, but surprisingly fresh for the quality of the paper. A good copy. The pirated first Russian book edition, after a 1963 appearance in the periodical INOSTRANAYA LITERATURA ("Foreign Literature") and a 1964 special separate issue of ROMAN-GAZETA ("Novel as Newspaper"). Like other books by foreign authors published in the USSR at the time, this edition is a piracy, with no royalties paid to the author. No printing date, which indicates this is the true first edition (after 100 numbered copies). Printed on mold-made paper. An excellent copy, some mild rubbing and faint spots on cover, spine a little toned, else fine. Nice little bookplate in the shape of a postal stamp on flyleaf. First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 284pp. Black cloth lettered in gold at the spine and with a small gold-stamped decoration to the upper board. With decorated endpapers, a title page decoration, a frontispiece and twelve Henderson tailpiece decorations. Top edge lightly dust marked and spotted, others untrimmed. A narrow strip of browning to the free endpapers and a touch of soiling to the pastedowns. A very good copy in the most uncommon dust wrapper which reproduces a larger version of the frontispiece design; the wrapper is price-clipped, tanned at the spine panel, a little marked, spotted and stained in places with a tiny sliver of loss from the head of the spine panel, just a fraction of further loss from the tail and several more millimetres of loss from the corner tips and upper edge. Condition: VG+. First edition, second issue with tipped in title page (as expected). 327 pp. followed by two leaves of ads. Light bumping to corners and spine ends. Previous owner's stamp to FFEP and an owner's bookplate affixed to rear of first color plate. Solid and square book. Front pastedown has some cracking at hinge.

The front endpaper (which is to say the rear endpaper, the book being bound back-to-front in the traditional Japanese style) has been signed, dated (November 8, 1984), and inscribed by Abe to long-time Knopf senior editor Charles Elliott. The inscription is entirely in Japanese, although Abe has also added his first name in a stylized Arabic script.
