William Emory was a 19th-century American engineer who is best remembered for his detailed journal describing the events of his journey down the Rio Grande into Southern California. This journal was published by the U.S. Congress under the title 'Notes of a Military Reconnaissance' and was one of the most important travel guidebooks of 19th-century California. It was notable for its illustrations and extensive details of the Southwest.
According to Wagner-Camp on Emory,

Description:
Washington: Wendell and Van Benthuysen, 1848. First edition, House issue; 8vo, pp. 614; 2 folding maps (1 miscreased), 67 lithograph plates and plans, a few illustrations in the text; original brown cloth, printed paper label on spine scraped, affecting 3 letters; small breaks at the spine ends; piece from p. 395-6 torn, but with no loss of text; a good, sound copy. "That the House issue has priority is indicated by the fact that many copies (including this one) were seeming issued before the large map was available. The plates of the scenery in the Senate edition were lithographed by Weber & Co.; in the House edition these are all usually done by C. B. Graham, though in some copies the 24 plates in Abert's report were executed, in a superior manner, anonymously" (Howes). Such is the case in this copy which has the superior plates. Howes E-145; Graff 1249; Cowan, p. 195; Sabin 22536; Wheat, Transmississippi West, 544; Wagner-Camp 148:5; Zamorano Eighty, 33.
