Paris: Baudouin Frères, 1827. First edition, all published. Each volume with frontispiece and engraved Carte gastronomique de la France (folded). Prospectus bound in at front of vol. I. Pp. [iv], iv, xxiv, 234, [221]-224; [xx], 264; [xx], 246. 3 vols. 18mo. Modern boards. Occasional light foxing. Near Fine. First edition, all published. Each volume with frontispiece and engraved Carte gastronomique de la France (folded). Prospectus bound in at front of vol. I. Pp. [iv], iv, xxiv, 234, [221]-224; [xx], 264; [xx], 246. 3 vols. 18mo. Nouvel Almanach des Gourmands, Complete. A dozen years after the final volume of the celebrated Almanach des Gourmands of Grimod de la Reynière, Horace Raisson and Léon Thiessé initiated a new annual dedicated to the pleasures of the table and the stomach. It ran three years and contains reviews of restaurants and hotels, provisioners and wine merchants, recipes. Raisson was a prolific author whose subsequent works on gastronomy and etiquette were translated into English, Spanish, and Swedish, and did much to spread the fame of French cookery. The third year was edited by Thiessé alone.
The three frontispieces depict "L'inspiration du gourmand," "Le premier devoir du gourmand," and "Promenade du gourmand." The excellent gastronomical map shows the diversity of French agricultural and wine-making regions.
The prospectus praises Grimod de la Reynière and calls for samples to be submitted for review: 'since conscientious gourmands can only speak of that which they have seen, felt, and tasted, news, documents, samples, and "légitimations," in short, everything relevant to the Almanach des Gourmands ... will be subitted to the appreciation of the enlightened jury, and then scrupulously announced, described, and judged in future annuals.'
Notable in the second volume is a somewhat scoffing notice of Brillat Savarin's Physiologie du gout, which is deemed to be somewhat over long. The tone changes dramatically, for in the third volume is a contemporary biographical notice and elegy of Brillat Savarin, who died in 1826, not long after publication of his celebrated work.
An interesting work from a key period in French gastronomy. Copies of the first year of this annual are found in institutional collections; the later years are quite scarce: complete sets at NYPL; Lilly, with the first year in second edition, lacking the map. The Bibliothèque National does not locate the second year. Vicaire 673; Bitting p. 365; Cagle 366 (defective copy of a second printing), 367,368

Child writes to a Mrs. Fairbanks: "What a nice hour we spent with you the other afternoon. I only wish it could be repeated, as I would love to hear more about Thomas Wolfe and all you know about him. It would also be fascinating for me to hear much much more about your culinary experiences. Mrs. de Santillana [Child's editor] says you are the best cooks she knows, and I can well believe it from the interest you take. It is indeed a fascinating subject and a beau métier. This booklet focuses on a traditional domestic interior and features a beautiful double-page plate showing the layout and arrangement of a Japanese period home, showing respective zones for food preparation, cooking and the entertainment of guests. Items specifically illustrated and described include lacquer wares, a charcoal-burning stove, lanterns, wooden buckets and items used in the tea ceremony. London: Printed and sold by Andrew Sowle, in the Holloway-Lane, near Shoreditch, 1685. Octavo (14.5 x 9.5cm.), [12], 96, 91-232, [6] pages; collation: A6, B-Q8, R2 (I3 signed I2). Sheet A/R should have had R1 and R2 as A7 and A8. It was wrongly imposed so that A5r and A6v were perfected by pages of R and vice versa. The error was corrected by pasting leaves from half another copy of the sheet over the erroneous pages. Sheet I was similarly mis-imposed, but instead of using parts of a complete sheet, a half-forme was printed on one side only and pasted over I5v, 6r, 7v, 8r. Text and register are continuous despite pagination error. AAS records indicates their copy has pagination and collation the same as this one. ESTC cites this pagination and offers a variant (2d issue?) with pagination: [12], 97, 92-232, [6] pages (i.e. H1r is numbered 97 and H1v is numbered 92). Table of contents. Publisher's advertisement [6 pages] at rear, for two other titles by Tryon. Caption title (page 1) Every good…
