Basel: Joh. Amerbach. Not after 1497. 18th century vellum (small brown stain on cover and minor worming in the boards) 4to . A very nice copy of what is either the second or third edition of the complete works of Anselm of Canterbury. The editio princeps was printed in 1491 at Nuremberg and a subsequent undated edition appeared at Strassburg (after 1496) which may precede this edition (Goff) or come after (GK). "Saint Anselm of Canterbury (1033-1109) was the outstanding Christian philosopher and theologian of the eleventh century. He is best known for the celebrated “ontological argument” for the existence of God in chapter two of the Proslogion, but his contributions to philosophical theology (and indeed to philosophy more generally) go well beyond the ontological argument. ... He was canonized in 1494 and named a Doctor of the Church in 1720." (Stanford Enc. of Philososphy). In addition to his theistic proofs he wrote on his conception of the divine nature, as well as accounts of human freedom, sin, and redemption. Anselm's motto was “faith seeking understanding” (fides quaerens intellectum) [208] leaves. Gothic type; 2 columns; 50 lines; guide letters; early ownership inscription crossed out and collection stamp erased on title; some annotations in a contemporary hand; very nice copy. § Hain-Copinger 1136; GW 2033; BMC III, 759; Goff A-761
