Duisburg, 1587. THE FIRST DOUBLE-HEMISPHERE WORLD MAP Engraving with original hand color: 151/2" x 201/2" References: Rodney W. Shirley, The Mapping of the World (London, 1983), n. 157. This striking map represents a re-working of Mercator's great world map of 1569 by his son and successor Rumold, who transformed it into double-hemispherical form in 1587 and incorporated it into editions of Mercator's influential atlas from 1595. The engraving is a model of clarity and neatness, with typical cursive flourishes to the lettering of the sea names. Surrounding the hemispheres is a strapwork border, while between them at the top margin is an armillary sphere and at the bottom an elaborate compass rose. Gerard Mercator's prominent south-west bulge on the coastline of South America, which was soon to be corrected, is retained. This superb map represents a seminal moment in the history of cartography, for it was the primary instrument by which knowledge of Mercator's projection was diffused throughout Europe.. Book.

Description:
Duisberg , 1587. Very Good. Notes: Fine dark impression of this scarce World map.An important sixteenth century double-hemispherical map of the world, with elaborate strapwork borders, armillary sphere, compass rose, galleon and sea monster, latin text on verso. First drawn out by Gerard, and then later condensed and reissued by his son Rumold Mercator. The North Pole is depicted as a landmass containing four major rivers. As well, the Korean peninsula is absent, as is the Hudson's Bay. New Guinea is oversized in this mapp, and Australia seems to be joined with Antarctica. The old world (Europe, Asia, and Africa) as well as the eastern coast of North America is shown in beautiful detail and accuracy, reflecting the information available at the time. South America is shown with a fairly large bulge, indicating Gerard Mercator's influence on this map. Gerardus Mercator (1512 - 1594) was a cartographer, philosopher and mathematician. He is best known for his work in cartography, in particular the world… Read More
