First published by the Olympia Press in 1957 as THE ORGANIZATION. A modernist re-telling of Sade's The Bedroom Philosophers. The change of title was done to fool the Paris vice squad who had an alphabetized 'hit list' of proscribed books. Green border on title page.

Publisher's label over price to rear panel, remainder of bookseller's label to rear endpaper, gum residue from removed label to ffep., a little edgewear and bumping to corners. About very good. First edition, second issue. No. 40 in the Traveller's Companion series. First published by Olympia in 1957 with the title The Organization, the book was suppressed two years later by the French authorities on grounds of obscenity. This impression was re-issued in 1962 with a slightly different title in an attempt to get around the ban. They should have tried harder with the new title: the book was prosecuted in 1963. 5.40.2

Iris Owens (1929-2008), Olympia Press writer, pornographer, satirist, Paris and Greenwich Village resident. Samuel Beckett praised her and Terry Southern wrote that "aside from her Junoesque beauty, [Owens] had rapier wit and devastating logic. She was a pre-Sontag Sontag." In the 1950s and '60s, Owens resided in Paris and was connected with the expatriate writers' circle known who created the literary journal Merlin.
