Paris: Se vendent chez l'Autheur aux Galleries du Louvre. ca. 1670-1700. Contemporary vellum Large folio . Magnificent collected volume of ornamental suites of the designs by Jean Berain the Elder (1637 1711) and engraved by Benard, Daigremont, Dolivar, Giffart, Le Pautre, Scotin and others. They appear in the are first state with the imprint "Se vendent chez l'Autheur aux Galleries du Louvre" when it has been included and without a royal privilege found in later issues. A number of suites are also without text and privilege found in later states. A collected edition (the second state) was issued by his son-in-law, Jacques Thuret, clockmaker to the king from 1694; which appeared under his imprint in 1711. Most of Berain's material that has come on the market has been from this later issue. Suites of the first issue, as appear here, are rare."Jean Berain began his career as an engraver, but quickly rose to a position of first rank as a designer for the king ... In 1675 he succeeded his master, Henri de Gissey, as desinateur du chambre et du cabinet du roi in the office of the menus-plaisirs, where he designed decorations for court ceremonies and festivities, and collaborated regularly in the decoration and on the machinery of the Opéra. He received numerous commissions, and his designs were in fashion during his entire career, in whatever genre he worked. They became models of ornamentation for the style Louis XIV during almost the entire length of that reign."Most of Berain's efforts were directed toward the planning of ephemeral structures for the menus-plairis, but he also produced engraved designs such as those assembled in this volume, for interiors, furniture, decorative objects, garden parterres, and funeral ceremonies. ..."As an artist, Berain followed directly after Jean Le Pautre ... and he replaced Le Pautre's grand manner with a new, more informal and simple style composed of flat surface ornamentation and geometric decor. His void blank surfaces, used as design elements and contrasting with the elaborate ornamentation, were in opposition to Le Pautre (who had a horror vacui). Berrain also recognized nature in his designs. ... He was widely influential, especially in Sweden and Germany. His mantle passsed to Claude III Audran, who would perfect the light, easy rocaille style" (Millard, French, pp. 32- 33).Pictured are: grotesques, various panels, ceilings, and wall-mounted lamps, tables, bowls and vases, fireplaces, stage settings, festivals, gardens, decorative banquets etc. Included are two parts with engraved title-pages.Plates with early manuscript numbering 1 to 88 and 3 unnumbered suites (*) in somewhat smaller size (total 15 plates) interleaved. All plates in first state with the imprint Chez ledit Autheur aux galleries du Louvre or without printed text or numbers (none with Thurets imprint or with a royal privilege which according to Weigert indicates second state as in the examples in Millard collection no. 19).Plt. 1.
