Cambridge: The University Press, 1903. Including Paradise Lost and Paradise Regained, in a prize binding signed with inked stamp at top edge of first blank flyleaf by the bindery of Bickers and Son of Leicester. Worn but still attractive black leather with five raised bands on spine. Spine gilt embellished with a floral design, and cover with a large crest in gilt, the motto of which reads "DEO DANTE DEDI." Border of covers double ruled in gilt. Edges of the covers also in gilt but the turn ins purposefully not gilt so as not to detract from the design apparently. Front joint cracked but the hinge is holding and the binding is still sturdy. Back joint partially cracked but that hinge also strong. Brightly marbled endpapers with lots of colors, the blue and green prdominating. Leather with scuffing and areas of more serious wear, but overall the impression ont he shelf is of a dignified old volume. Bookplate of Charterhouse on front paste-down marbled endpaper. Name of student crossed out but signature of headmaster and date of 1903 not crossed out. Contents of the volume are clean. Edges of text block marbled.
