(1907). xxxiv, 415pp, Introduction to New Edition, Preface to 1907 edition, 4 maps (1 folding colored at end), 31 monochrome illustrations, appendix, index. 8vo/21.5cm. Green cloth, rubbed at extremities, quarter inch cloth break front joint, foreedge foxed and occasionally throughout, small dealer label on rear paste-down, otherwise internally clean, tight and very good. Ellsworth Huntington (1876-1947), perhaps the best known American geographer of his era, explored the effect of climate on civilization. In 1903-04 he accompanied Raphael Pumpelly on an expedition to Russian Turkestan; in 1905 he accompanied Robert Le Moyne Barrett to Chinese Turkestan. He engaged in an ongoing debate with Sir Aurel Stein on the causes of dessication in Central Asia..
