John Audubon (1785 – 1851), whose surname became synonymous with birds, produced a prolific body of work, including over 435 paintings of birds. America's dominant wildlife artist for half a century, Audubon's childhood fascination with birds extended into his adulthood, and he spent days and weeks on the frontier, amassing an enormous portfolio of life-size bird drawings. Reflecting his deep love of birds and his concern for conservation, the Audubon Society was established in his name in the late 1800s, years after his death. His work remains the standard against which 20th and 21st century bird artists are still measured.

Bright, bold colors, heavy paper, very good. ELEAZAR ALBIN (1690 – 1742) was an English naturalist and watercolorist illustrator who wrote and illustrated a number of books including A Natural History of English Insects (1720), A Natural History of Birds (1731–38) and The Natural History of Spiders and other Curious Insects (1736). Nothing is known of Albin's early life, though he may have been German-born; he claimed to have been in Jamaica in 1701. In 1708 he is known to have been married and living in Piccadilly, London. The 2nd royal octavo editon of Audubon's BIRDS OF AMERICA differs from the first edition in one important respect: there is a lithographed color background. That difference is the reason that many collectors prefer the second edition over the first. This lithograph is guaranteed to be more than 170 years old. It is in near fine condition: clean and bright, with only a couple of tiny spots of foxing. Now arcivally matted in a 16" by 12" off-white rag mat and ready to be framed.. Second Octavo Edition. Gloucester, Virginia: Unpublished, 1922. William Joseph Schaldach (1896-1982) was a writer on art and outdoor sporting, editor for Field and Stream, and most notably an important American wildlife artist. He studied at the Art Students League under John Sloan and George Bridgman. The image of the drypoint offered here is 6 1/2 inches by 4 1/4 inches and is matted 13" X 10 3/4" and shrink-wrapped.
