Chez Briasson, David, Le Breton, Durand, 1762. TWELVE VOLUMES UNIFORMLY BOUND. Panelled spines with leather spine labels. Gilt floral designs in panels. All edges stained red. Marbled endpapers. Small owner's plate on front pastedown of first six volumes. Wear to spine extremities and covers. Some loss of leather to corners and frayed spine ends. All bindings are intact, a few front joints are weakened. Internally quite clean throughout. Off-setting from newspaper clippings on a very few pages. These plate books contain a total of 3063 copper-engraved plates, many are double, several triple and quad plates. Plate descriptions (plate legends) precede the plates. All descriptions are in French. Publishing dates are from 1762-1772 for the original eleven volumes, the supplement published in 1777. The plates are arranged in alphabetical order according to subject. They complement the massive reference work by Denis Diderot (1713-1784) and Jean Le Rond d'Alembert (1717-1783) , "The Encyclopedie ou Dictionnaire Raisonne Des Sciences..." published in seventeen volumes between 1751 and 1765. It was later expanded to 28 volumes and went through many revisions and translations. The work was the first encyclopedia to include contributions from many named contributors, and the first to describe the mechanical arts. The plates are of fine quality, printed on several different thicknesses of paper, as was usual, due to the employ of several printing houses. Especially impressive are the sections on maps, architecture, weaving, theatres, carriages, locks, natural history, mineralogy, human anatomy, natural science, surgical instruments, horology, fencing, boat construction. The French engraver Robert Renard (1734-1777) furnished at least 1800 of the plates. Volume 12 is the supplement for the year 1777 and was published in Paris and Amsterdam. We have not found another complete set of eleven volumes and the supplement of 1777 for sale in the past 40 years. According to OCLC six institutions worldwide have the set in their holdings. Individual volumes have sold in recent years, We have also seen groups of plates on a specific subject with their plate legends for sale. Please see photographs. In Verona, Per A. Scolari. 1749-1750. Hard Cover. The first three volumes of what was eventually an eight-volume set. Vol I: 4 p.l., 388 p.; Vol II: [6], 395-838, [2] p.; Vol. III: 325, [326-327] pages; illustrations; quarto; 27 cm. These historical notices of the churches of Verona are concerned with their architectural history and the paintings and other artwork contained in each. Biancolini published his most significant documents in these early volumes. He continued to add to this foundation and published volumes through the eighth, which appeared in 1771. Schlosser-Magnino (p. 567) calls for 7 volumes, but the most complete set we could find, the one in the Avery Collection at Columbia, has eight in nine volumes. This is a foundation source for the study of architecture in Verona. Very good, untrimmed copy in contemporary cardboard. Stock#OB120.
