LA REGENTA

by Alas, Leopoldo (Translated with an Introduction By John Rutherford)

London, United Kingdom: Allen Lane, 1984 FIRST EDITION OF ENGLISH TRANSLATION. [This translation first published 1984] Published simultaneously by Penguin Books. 734 pages with notes. Some shelf & age wear. Clean text, no internal markings. Original dustjacket not price clipped - shelf and age wear to jacket especially around edges. First published in Spanish in 1884-5. La Regenta was attacked by critics in 1885 as an obscene religious monstrosity and a plagiarism of Flaubert's 'Madame Bovary'. But in recent years this, the only full-length novel by Leopoldo Alas has been acknowledged as one of the outstanding works of Spanish literature. The novel exhibits the same fascinating mixture of rich humour and intense moral seriousness which characterizes that other Spanish masterpiece, 'Don Quixote'. English hardback edition is now out of print.
