London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., 1948. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Here is a beautiful fine binding of the first British edition of Churchill's The Second World War. This is Churchill's history of the epic struggle that was so indelibly stamped by his leadership. Seldom, if ever, has history endowed such a statesman with both singular ability to make history, and singular ability to write it. Churchill's eloquence and insight frames the world-defining events of his time in truly enduring prose. This six-volume epic has been called "indispensable reading for anyone who seeks a true understanding of the war that made us what we are today." This full set of six British first edition, first printing volumes is bound in an exceptional half morocco in dark tan over nicely contrasting lighter tan cloth boards. This is a high quality, quite handsome binding. The spines feature raised bands, ruled compartments, gilt decoration including the lion rampant, red morocco title panels. The covers feature double blind rules at all transitions. The contents are bound with gilt top edges, head and foot bands, and heavy stock laid paper endpapers. Condition of the binding is truly fine. The British first edition was printed on postwar economy standards paper and proved exceptionally prone to spotting and age-toning. Thus even many finely bound copies featured flawed contents. The starting point for this fine binding was superior set of British first editions. The contents of all six volumes are unusually bright and clean. We find no internal spotting and no previous ownership marks of any kind. The fore edges and bottom edges of all six volumes are superior, with just a few tiny scattered spots on the fore edge of Volume IV as the only trace of spotting we find in the set. The gilt top edges are uniformly bright with some trivial scuffing, but no loss of gilt. An beautiful set with excellent shelf presence. Description:
Winnipeg: Universal Life Assurance and Annuity Company, 1940. 1st Edition. Paperback. This is an exceedingly rare wartime speech pamphlet featuring Churchill's Address to the Italian People of 23rd December 1940. Broadcasting from the Cabinet War Rooms, Churchill sought to assure the Italians of Britain's historic friendship with Italy and place blame for the conflict on Mussolini. Churchill's speech is published here with two others - King George VI's Christmas Day Message of 25th December 1940 and Canadian Prime Minister Mackenzie King's Christmas Day message to the Canadian Army. This speech pamphlet is unusual in several respects - its publication, its survival, and its superlative condition. Per Churchill Bibliographer Ronald Cohen (pages 530-532) the publisher - Universal Life Assurance and Annuity Company - was in business from 1902 to 1942. In an exuberant surge of patriotism, the company published over 40 booklets in the "Universal Life for Victory Series", a few of which were speeches… Read More

New York: The British Library of Information, 1941. First edition, only printing. Leaflet. This is the first edition, only printing, of Churchill's 18 March 1941 address to the Pilgrims Society (erroneously printed as "Pilgrim Society" on the leaflet cover). Founded in 1902, the Pilgrims Society is an Anglo-American organization whose objective is "the encouragement of Anglo-American good fellowship". Churchill addressed the Pilgrims Society on 18 March to welcome the new American Ambassador to the United Kingdom, John. G. Winant, in the wake of the passage of the Lend-Lease Act by the U.S. Congress. "We welcome you here, Mr. Winant, at a moment when the great battle in which your government and nation are deeply interested is developing its full scope and severity... Mr. Winant, you come to us at a grand turning point in the world's history." The folded, four-panel leaflet measures 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm). Condition is near-fine. Description:
New York: The British Library of Information, 1940. First edition, only printing. Pamphlet. This is the first edition, only printing of Churchill's December 23, 1940 address to the Italian People. The end of 1940 found Britain having escaped the imminent threat of invasion, but nonetheless beleaguered and pinning many hopes on the United States, which was still months away from approving the Lend Lease Act and nearly a year from formally entering the war. "With his thoughts focused on the many dangers in the Aegean and Mediterranean, Churchill broadcast on the evening of December 23 to the Italian People." (Gilbert, Volume VI, p.960). The eight-page, wire-stitched pamphlet measures 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm). Condition is near-fine. The paper is bright, clean, and crisp showing virtually no wear. The only flaw is a small .25 inch (.64 cm) roughly circular blemish at the upper right edge of the front cover. The pamphlet is protected within a removable, clear, archival mylar sleeve. Boston: Houghton Mifflin Co., 1953. 1st Edition. Hardcover. This is the second volume of the U.S. first "Definitive" edition, only printing of Churchill's war speeches. During his long public life, Winston Churchill played many roles worthy of historical note - member of Parliament for more than half a century, distinguished soldier and war correspondent, author of scores of books, ardent social reformer, combative cold warrior, Nobel Prize winner. But more than anything else, it was Winston Churchill's leadership during the Second World War that made him a preeminent historical figure. Of Churchill, Edward R. Murrow said: "He mobilized the English language and sent it into battle." Between 1941 and 1946, Churchill's war speeches were published in seven individual volumes in both British and U.S. editions. In 1952, during Churchill's second premiership, the British publisher - Cassell - reissued the War Speeches as a new, "Definitive" three-volume British edition. London: Thornton Butterworth Limited, 1927. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a jacketed British first edition, first printing of the fourth volume of Churchill's monumental history of the First World War. A quarter of a century before the Second World War endowed him with lasting fame, Winston Churchill played a uniquely critical, controversial, and varied role in the “War to end all wars”. The events of these 1916-1918 volumes, of which this is Part II, include Churchill's time at the Front following his political exile and his subsequent return to the Cabinet. hough the U.S. first edition of The World Crisis preceded the British, many consider the British edition aesthetically superior, with its larger volumes and shoulder notes summarizing the subject of each page. Unfortunately, the original dust jackets are quite scarce and the smooth navy cloth of the British first editions proved quite susceptible to wear, the contents prone to spotting and toning. New York: The British Library of Information, 1941. First U.S. edition, only printing. Leaflet. This is the first edition, only printing of Churchill's January 9, 1941 speech to the Pilgrims Society (referred to as "the Pilgrims" in the title on the cover) welcoming Lord Halifax as British Ambassador to the United States. Founded in 1902, the Pilgrims Society is an Anglo-American organization whose objective is "the encouragement of Anglo-American good fellowship" – a fellowship acutely vital to Britain in January 1941. The folded, four-panel leaflet measures 6 x 9 inches (15.2 x 22.9 cm), the speech printed on the first three pages. Condition is near-fine. The leaflet is complete with virtually no wear. Description:
The German Government (no publisher indicated), 1940 (n.d.). English-language edition, only printing. Paperback. This is a rare, extremely well-preserved, and fascinating wartime Nazi propaganda piece ridiculing Churchill's wartime alliance of convenience with Stalin. It was produced by the Germans specifically to help recruit captured British soldiers to the Britisher Freikorps, the SS unit made up of British troops. This English language edition was distributed to British POWs. Versions are known in Croatian, French, German, Norwegian, and Swedish, but by far the most important and scarce is the English language version. The format is newspaper cartoons critical of Stalin on each right hand page with notes and Churchill quotes critical of Stalinist Russia on opposing pages. The effect is a stinging contrast between Churchill's wartime alliance of necessity with his long history of ardent anti-communist sentiment. The book measures 8 5/8 x 6 inches, is 110 pages long, and is bound in… Read More

Description:
Canada: Winnipeg Free Press, Regina Leader-Post, Saskatoon Star-Phoenix, 1940. First edition, both individual and collective issues. Paperback. This is a collection of eight early Second World War pamphlets, each publishing British Prime Minister Winston Churchill’s speeches spanning 13 May 1940 to 12 November 1940. These pamphlets were published in Canada simultaneously by three Canadian newspapers on or about 13 December 1940. The newspapers were the Regina Leader-Post, Winnipeg Free Press, and Saskatoon Star-Phoenix. Each of the three newspapers put out their own edition in their respective cities at the same time. A week later, there was also a collective edition with all three newspapers listed as publishers together on the title page. In total, there were eight variations – each of the four publication issues bound in both yellow and green wraps, and orange and green wraps. As may be imagined, it is almost prohibitively challenging to assemble all eight different issues. Here is a full set… Read More

Description:
London: Cassell and Company, Ltd., 1948. First edition, first printing. Hardcover. This is a six-volume jacketed set of British first editions of The Second World War, Winston S. Churchill's history of the epic 20th Century struggle that was so indelibly stamped by his leadership. Jacketed British first edition sets in marginal condition are not uncommon. However, the coarse cloth bindings of this edition proved susceptible to soiling and mildew, the contents (printed on post-war "Economy Standards" paper) proved highly prone to spotting, the red-stained top edges are most often severely faded, and the dust jackets proved exceptionally vulnerable to pronounced spine toning. This complete, first edition, first printing set features very good volumes in very good dust jackets. The black cloth bindings are square, tight, and clean with bright spine gilt. We note only trivial scuffs and a few bruised corners. The contents are likewise superior for the edition. We find no previous ownership marks.… Read More

The bindings are compelling in both craftsmanship and appearance, featuring three-quarter brown Morocco goatskin with marbled paper-cover boards. The spines feature gilt-ruled compartments separated by raised and gilt-decorated spine bands. The covers feature gilt-ruled transitions.
