Kurutz [363a] -- calls this book, "one of the earliest, liv eliest, and most detailed accounts of the Gold Rush." Ex-lib with call number on spine, several inked and penciled notations on de dication page; pocket or residue. A clean tight copy overall, wit h scattered foxing and faint soiling throughout. Covers somewhat faded, with wear to corners and spine ends; discoloration in gutt er .

Good. 8vo, publisher's dark brown cloth stamped in gilt on spine, good copy with wear, soil, darkening and discoloration to cloth, contents good with some light dampstaining, light soil and rippling to endpapers, contents mainly very good and clean. This is the less sought-after first printing issued without frontispiece or the map published for the second edition in 1850.

Small tear at bottom of free edge of the front fly leaf. Blank leaf at end of text has been torn out. One of the earliest published accounts of the gold fields, reprinted numerous times in subsequent years. "Johnson arrived at San Francisco by steamer on April 1, 1849 and left there by steamer for Panama May 1. The month of April was spent in a trip to Sacramento and the mining camps" - Streeter. Johnson came by way of Panama. Detailed narrative of first years of gold discovery. San Francisco, Santa Barbara, Monterey, Sacramento, San Diego, Yuba district, Weber's Creek, Sutter and his fort, gambling halls, Indian murders, etc. No maps or plates were issued with this edition. Some light cosmetic restoration to the covers, lightly foxed, else a good copy.
