Results of a 1979 visit to Tibet by the author and her New York Times veteran far eastern correspondent Seymour Topping on assignment. A fair-minded assessment in its attempt to find a middle way between the propaganda put out by the Chinese authorities and the refugee community. The author's photographs include a rare set of pictures of the controversial series of clay sculptures representing the former feudal oppression of the serfs. Audrey Ronning Topping is a photojournalist specializing in China with five books to her credit. Daughter of a former Canadian ambassador to China and granddaughter of Lutheran missionaries there, she was educated there.
