Fair/No jacket. 516 pages with index, illustrated with tissue protected portrait frontispiece and black and white drawings and photographs. Revised edition printed after Gladstone's death in 1898 to include the story of his last months. Red cloth binding with heavily ornate gilt decoration and titles on front cover and spine, gilt top edge. Spine faded and scratched with spot on title block, some edge wear, corners and spine ends bumped and frayed, spine cocked, former owner's bookplate and pencil notation on front fixed end paper, which has a wrinkle near hinge, hinges weak and showing webbing, interior pages bright, club name stamp on back fixed end paper, which has a tear at top edge near hinge, binding otherwise tight.
