About This Item

Paris: Henri Plon, 1866. Very good overall, 9 inch 8vo., 146 pp, original endpapers, title and half title, contemporary marbled boards, quarter leather. No major text browning. Small library withdrawl stamp on title page. Covers a bit chipped at the edges. Rebacked with red leather, gilt lettered, 4 band spine in nice condition. All 5 plans present, several very large folding colored lithographs. The first of these is actually in 2 parts: Plan De Port - Said, Plan De Kantara. The other 3 are: Plan D'Ismailia, Plan De Suez, Plan General du Canal Maritime. The latter shows the full extent from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean. Several of these are quite large and detailed. They are in excellent condition, a few with minor edge tears at folds, but no serious image intrusion. Lesseps founded this company isn 1855, so this is a realtively late summary. Work had begun on the canal, at Port Said, in 1859, and was completed when the Mediterannean was reached in 1869. Pasha Said had been a childhood friend of Lesseps. Several copies of this publication are seen in the online KVK catalogue, including the British Library, Bibliotheque Nationale, and Union Catalogue of Italy. This is a nice piece of Suez Canal history, with the plans in very good condition.. Very Good.

About The Prime Meridian: Antique Maps & Books

The Prime Meridian: Antique Maps & Books is owned and operated by Joel & Deborah Kovarsky. We first opened in 1998, but have had a decades-old interest in old maps, books, and paper, stemming from a comparable long-standing interest in how knowledge is used. Our business is run via the internet. We do not run an open shop, however we do welcome visitors by appointment only. Before attempting a visit, please contact us. We are a specialty business, dealing in antiquarian maps and related books (atlases, history of cartography, selected reference books, etc.). Please feel free to contact us for specific inquiries.
