Printed: 1647. 1597-1663 Duodecimo, 5.5 x 3.2 inches. Seventh edition. [*]6, A-I12, K6; A-B12, C8. This copy is a little stained on the first and last few leaves, bound in nineteenth century quarter calf. By far the most important labor of these closing years was the completion, revision, and arrangement for the 164 poems (in some 140 different stanzaic patterns) that in 1633 were published as 'The Temple.' Herbert's final disposition of these famous lyrics, as Walton tells the story, was itself a votive gesture. Although long plagued by failing health, he himself had made no plans for publication. At last, as he lay dying he handed them to Edmund Duncon, an associate of Ferrar's at Little Gidding. 'Sir,' he told his visitor, 'I pray deliver this little book to my dear brother Ferrar, and tell him he shall find in it a picture of the many spiritual conflicts that have passed betwixt God and my soul before I could subject mine to the will of Jesus my Master, in whose service I have now found perfect freedom. Desire him to read it; and then, if he can think it may turn to the advantage of any dejected poor soul, let it be made public, if not, let him burn it, for I and it are less than the least of God's mercies.' A few weeks later (1 March 1633) he was dead at thirty-nine." (Baker)

1677 FAMED 1ed Raphael ART Vatican Frescoes Pope Sixtus Renaissance Woodcuts
Raphael was one of the most famous and important Italian painters of the Renaissance. Most of his work is still regularly appreciated and studied in museums all over the world. Though, perhaps the most famous collection of Raphael paintings is in the Vatican museum, where spaces now known as the Raphael Rooms feature exquisite full-wall frescoes of his artwork.
Italian engraver Pietro Saint Bartoli published a series of engravings of Raphael's frescoes in the 17th-century. The plates themselves feature the text 'Vaticani Palatii Xystis', referring to the Vatican palace under Pope Sixtus IV who constructed portions of the Vatican for art such as the Sistine Chapel and the Vatican Library.
Bartoli's collection of Raphael engravings was dedicated to Cardinal Carlo Massimo following his death in 1677 – a collection of 43 stunning oblong folio illustrations!

Description:
1607 SURVEYING 1ed Norden Surveyors Dialogue English Lords vs Tenants Farm Land

First edition of the first 17th-century work on English surveying!

John Norden was a 16th-century English cartographer and surveyor who, in 1600, was appointed to survey land in Devon for the Duchy of Cornwall. While mapmaking brought him fame, it was his work as surveyor of numerous royal castles that has brought him lasting recognition. His treatise on surveying is one of the earliest of its kind, and the very first English treatise on surveying of the 17th-century.

Honeyman's account of this work is perhaps the most telling.
"The first English surveying publication of the 17th-century and the second surveying text to be written in dialogue form. Norden gives a clear account of the operation of survey and attempts to reconcile the differences between surveyor and tenant."

According to Kiely,
"That the profession of surveyor was not in high repute among the common people may be seen from the opening statement of the… Read More

Description:
A compilation of Quarles' works. The overall title page with details of the publisher is missing, but there is a dedication to King Charles I which was clearly specially written for the work, which makes it likely that it was published in the 1630's (it makes no reference to Civil War). Each work has a separate title page or a large heading, and retains the dedications etc written when they were first published. The first text is 'A Feast for Worms' totalling 64 pages, which has a note for the Reader and has pages 13-36 misbound out of sequence. The second is Pentelogia, a short text covering pp 65-70. The third is Hadassa with a separate title page, preface to the Reader, introduction, dedication, and the History of Esther, running to p 147. The fourth is Job Militant with half title page, proposition, dedication and text running to p 231. The fifth is the History of Sampson with no title page but starting with 'To the Reader' and text to p 232. The sixth is Sion's Sonnets… Read More
