Baltimore, MD: The Association for Computing Machinery, 1965. Quarto. Original cream wrappers printed in black. Remnants of a mailing label to the upper wrapper. Just a little rubbed and creased. Excellent condition. First publication of the resolution principle, the standard of logical deduction in AI applications. The basic computational method in logic programming, the unification algorithm, was proposed by mathematician Jacques Herbrand in 1930, but its first practical use was not discovered until Robinson introduced it in this paper as the basic operation of his resolution principle. "Robinson described his resolution principle as 'machine-oriented' in that it was particularly suitable for proofs to be performed by computer, having only one rule of inference that could be applied many times. Robinson's resolution has since been used as the standard of logical deduction in AI applications" (Hook & Norman, Origins of Cyberspace 865). London: Stephen Austen , 1734 A fair copy in contemporary full leather binding with marbling to page edges. With frontispiece portrait of Isaac Barrow and a folding plate. Classed as 'fair' because the binding has wear and the front board is detaching. Isaac Barrow (1630-1677) was a mathematician, classical scholar and theologian. He is principally known for his work on tangents and Calculus. He was one of Isaac Newton's teachers. The binding has raised bands to spine and the remains of gilt tooling. There are gilt lines to the boards. The spine has wear and loss to top and bottom and there is wear to corners - but it would be an easy leather repair. Contents: frontispiece; title page; blank; contents listing and errata pp iii-vi; Prefatory Oration pp vii-xxxii; text in 3 sections with half titles pp 1 - 440; folding plate; index 12pp; Names used in the Work 4 pp; Finis. Description:
1697 LOTTERY 1ed History of Lotteries Leti Mathematics Philosophy Holland BANNED

Gregorio Leti was a notable 17th-century Italian historian who is known for having each of his published works placed on the 'Prohibited Books Index'. Leti's final work was 'Critique on Lotteries', a work discussing the history and popularities of public lotteries, especially those in Holland. Leti discusses how the lotteries created a world of greed and false hope, as well as made the social classes even more separate. However, it doesn't seem that Leti wrote this book to denounce the lottery; in fact, he wrote of his observations of the lotteries themselves and people's behaviors.

Solid hardcover. ; "This is the classic work upon which modern-day game theory is based. ... In it, John von Neumann and Oskar Morgenstern conceived a groundbreaking mathematical theory of economic and social organization, based on a theory of games of strategy. Not only would this revolutionize economics, but the entirely new field of scientific inquiry it yielded — game theory — has since been widely used to analyze a host of real-world phenomena from arms races to optimal policy choices of presidential candidates, from vaccination policy to major league baseball salary negotiations. And it is today established throughout both the social sciences and a wide range of other sciences." - Princeton University… Read More

Previous owner's signature on the title page, else unmarked. Great '70s graphic design and illustrations. Developed while Goldberg was a grad student at SJS to make sturdy geometrical models that "combine techniques from the mathematics and art classroom." Patterns are included to make a equilateral tetrahedron, equilateral hexahedron, isosceles hexahedron, cube, octahedron, decahedron, icosahedron, twenty-four triangular hedron, and concave hedron. Goldberg published a more popular variation of the book in 1977, without Sellars (misspelled "Sellers" on the title page). The newer "Pholdit" featured simpler shapes and was marketed toward a more general audience for "family fun." Scarce.
