London: Routledge & Sons, 1867. 1st edition of the Townsend translation, with 114 drawings by Weir engraved by Greenaway. Townsend, not Aesop, added 'morals' to the end of each story. Harrison Weir is the initiator of the cat show, and one of the finest illustrators of animals in his day. This is a vg+ copy in an unidentified fine binding done I believe in the 1930s. An interesting gift inscr. on the blank page preceding the title: "To a judge - may he always be merciful. L.M.H. [followed by a verse in German, and dated November 1935]." The binding, in an art-deco style with gilded leaves on the spine, is 3/4 red leather w/ red linen boards. It is bright and clean; the only damage being some wear to the external front hinge. 224 pp. incl. index.. First Thus. Hard Cover. Illus. by Harrison Weir/J. Greenaway.
