Rolf Alfred Stein (1911-1999) was one of the foremost Western scholars on Tibet in the twentieth century. When this book was first published in France in 1962 as La Civilisation tibetaine, he was a professor at the College de France. Pinfold (#16) describes this book as "a classic introduction to the civilization of Tibet..." and that its special value "lies in the portrait it paints of the country's traditional culture and society as it existed before the enormous and damaging changes of the last forty years."
