New York: Harper & Brothers, 1835. First edition. Hardcover. Very Good. 6 x 9 inches. x, 560 pages, no ads. Original blue embossed cloth with gilt printing on spine. Author signed letter laid-in on pp. 556 & 557 of Appendix, envelope is on p. 555. Letter is addressed to Capt. David Leslie, 306 E. Broadway NYC, some of the handwriting is difficult to decipher but it concerns an error made by the artist of the configuration of the rigging on the Potomac and asks Leslie to try to tell the artist how to correct it. Letter is dated Boston, Dec. 20, 1834 - before the publication date of 1835. Collated as complete with folding frontis illustration of Potomac at Valparaiso, plus 9 engraved plates, 5 of which are folding, all are tissue protected. Condition is Very Good, cloth is split at joints but hinges remain very sound, previous owners name, Edmund Norman Leslie on ffep dated 1836 and 1849, and at top of title page dated 1839, also his bookplate on front pastedown, illustrations are generally very good with occasional light foxing, folding view of Rio has an old cloth repair at fold, text pages are also very clean with a few spots of foxing, binding is tight.
