War Is Kind

New York: Frederick A. Stokes Company, 1899. Poems from Stephen Crane, who, like Poe, preferred his poetry over his stories. Drawings by Will Bradley in the Arts & Crafts style. Bradley also arranged and printed the book at the University Press in Cambridge and New York. Of Crane's "War Is Kind" poems, Michael Quigley, writing in "Firsts" magazine (January, 1996) noted ".....in recent years they have gained a place in the very forefront of his work, probably because they so essentially express his personal creed, especially that of the hopelessness of man in a hostile environment." Printed gray laid paper boards. Endpapers of book stock. Printed on gray laid paper (see BAL 4083). Paper label on spine. 96 numbered pages. Book plate of American author, poet, and collector of poetry, Carolyn Wells (1862-1942). Very small Brentano's book store sticker on rear pastedown. Bright, clean, gray paper with fine illustrations by Bradley. A tiny notch of paper loss from paper spine label not affecting any type. The fragile nature of this particular binding has unfortunately resulted in a thin splitting of about 3 inches to exterior of both front and rear upper hinge areas. There is also a one-eighth of an inch loss of material at head of spine, not affecting anything. Front cover has a very light, 3 inch scrape line. All pages still tight and overall an attractive copy and a fine example of artistic book design. "Do not weep, maiden, for war is kind.". Paper Covered Boards. Good+/No Jacket as Issued. Illus. by Will Bradley. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.

MP3 Audio CD. War Is Kind Do not weep, maiden, for war is kind. Because your lover threw wild hands toward the sky And the affrighted steed ran on alone, Do not weep. War is kind. Hoarse, booming drums of the regiment, Little souls who thirst for fight, These men were born to drill and die. The unexplained glory flies above them, Great is the battle-god, great, and his kingdom— A field where a thousand corpses lie. Do not weep, babe, for war is kind. Because your father tumbled in the yellow trenches, Raged at his breast, gulped and died, Do not weep. War is kind. Swift, blazing flag of the regiment, Eagle with crest of red and gold, These men were born to drill and die. Point for them the virtue of slaughter, Make plain to them the excellence of killing And a field where a thousand corpses lie. Mother whose heart hung humble as a button On the bright splendid shroud of your son, Do not weep. War is kind.

New York, Grove Press, 2022, trade paperback, 272 pp, Advance Uncorrected Proof (ARC), New. Straight, tight and clean with no wear or markings in bright, pictorial card covers, no dustjacket as issued. The pieces in this collection, written between 1956 and 1961 and including short fiction, a radio play, and a stunning early novel, offer startling insights into Cohens imagination and creative process. Cohen explores themes that would permeate his later work, from shame and unworthiness to sexual desire in all its sacred and profane dimensions to longing, whether for love, family, freedom, or transcendence. Trumansburg, NY: Out of Step Press. Fine with no dust jacket. 2016. Numbered Edition; First Printing. Pamphlet. The author's non-linear poem about the billeting of soldiers in civilian homes in wartime. Copy 89 of a limited edition of 250. Folded into the form of a letter, the work was letterpress printed in wraps of handmade "combat paper" made from military uniforms. The author says: "Some time ago-maybe a year, maybe two? I had a conversation with some of my Combat Paper brothers (well, the kids call them their combat paper uncles, so it follows…) that led to me writing the poem "Quartering." Which was informed by them, of course, and by all the rooms I'm in, and by imagining what is really required of all the caregivers I love. It's a thought experiment: if we tore down the barracks at military hospitals and offered incentives for Americans in the surrounding neighborhoods to quarter injured service members, what would the honest instructions… Read More
