A Killing Rain and Other Storiesby Reid Laurence
Reviewed on May 25 2009
"Review by Carrie White
A Killing Rain and Other Stories is, as the title suggests, a collection of short narrations of which the first and main story is about Raymond Mort, a killer of the usual means and method. But, there again, he's not. He doesn't kill just for the supposedly 'I hanker for the spillage of blood to satisfy my blood lust' kind of desire. He kills for the companionship that each victim he chooses gives him.
How they satisfy the strong feelings of loneliness within him is something you will only know by reading about him. And the Other Stories? Well, they're something unique in themselves. Well written and serving to enhance Raymond Mort's tale magnificently as the supporting group does for the main band at a music concert.
A Killing Rain kept me enthralled the minute I began to read the first story. Of course, it helped that I was reading my favorite subject matter but this book is a definite 'page turner' in my view. I think my only gripe about it was that there wasn't enough stories to read but this anthology will definitely be filed away in the must-read-many-a-time section of my own personal library.
Despite the likelihood of savagery contained within, Reid Laurence possesses the ability to encourage the reader to empathize with the protagonist using light hearted banter between murderer and victim(s)(A Killing Rain) and finding unique and interesting storylines(Carl).
This is by far the best horror anthology I've read in a long time. It just can't get any better than this.

Title: Talking Heads
Author: Reid Laurence
Publisher: Publish America
ISBN: 1-60836-335-X
Genre: Fiction
On seeing the title "A Killing Rain" the reader will be intrigued, wondering if it means a rain that kills or someone killing in the rain or because of the rain. Talented author Reid Laurence has crafted a tale in three parts that carry us through the life of a man who lives two lives, one inside his head where he can talk to the heads of men he has killed and the other where he takes a job at a museum as a guard and becomes involved in a forgery scheme.
Like most people who are lonely, Raymond seeks companionship, but does so in an unusual way. He kills those he will talk to and they become a guest and live in his refrigerator. Their conversations are full of snippets of Raymond's life and the reader comes to know him as a real personality.
The second title "Talking Heads" begins with Raymond stalking a girl in a department store and he is told to leave and not come back. He added to his own problems by talking to himself in the form of two imaginary friends in front of people. They also urge him to call the girl. He calls and when she answers, he hangs up. His friends are becoming more numerous as his relationship develops with the girl, Vicky.
Raymond's life has taken a turn in part three "A Sign of the Time" after an accident with one of his heads. His artistic talents are noticed again and he and Vicky are taking a trip to Mexico as he leaves the psychiatric prison hospital.
Author Reid Laurence has crafted a tale that would fit into a horror film with lots of suspense. This reviewer keeps wanting to tell people to stay away from dark alleys and don't visit Raymond Mort.
Recommended for any suspense or horror fan who likes psychological thrillers with lots of tension. A well told tale that will have you keeping your lights on after bedtime rolls around. Enjoy. I sure did.

Ticket to Happiness or the Self-indulgent Truth?by Reid Laurence

Always be careful what you wish for. You just might get it. Good advice to follow, especially if you're Reid Laurence and have just been handed a pair of buckeyes to wish on.
Reid makes a wish and wins the lottery and his troubles and travels begin. He hires a non-housekeeping housekeeper, gets calls from people he knew when he was five and takes a trip to an island off the coast of Africa to go fishing.
You'll wonder who was doing the real fishing and who was the fish. Talented author Reid Laurence has written a humorous satire that looks at several facets of life. He takes us through the ups and downs of being rich and poor, traveling to strange places, and just trying to get along.
A fun read that will keep you guessing as to what the next trouble will be to find Reid and his wife. You'll want to know if he manages to keep his sanity as well as his wealth. Enjoy. I did.

The story of a sociopathic killer in the 1930's with a surprise for the reader. Jack has been traveling around the south in boxcars as a bum might, killing fellow bums and taking their identity.
What he does in the various towns he stops in makes for an interesting study of a man with a temper and no empathy for his fellow man. This is a tale that might interest readers who like crime stories from the early part of the 20th century.
Lots of action and new faces as the reader follows Jack from place to place. Why can't he control his temper? Does he even try? Why does he have no feelings for people? These are some of the questions you'll be asking.
If you like surprises, you might enjoy this story as Jack's true identity is revealed. Something different in a mystery thriller.
