The song is from Robert Dale Owen's play, Drama of Pocohontas. Published in 1844 in Baltimore where Owen was a congressman. Owen was the son of Robert Owen, founder of the New Harmony colony in Indiana. Robert Dale Owen was one of the founders of the Smithsonian Institute and also ran New Harmony for a period of time. John Hewitt was a popular American composer and even wrote some important Civil War songs..
