Contents fresh and bright. 4to brown contemporary half calf with raised bands, red title label and gilt decoration. Blind decoration to front. Marbled page edges. Bound in with title page and index to Volume 3. Weekly paper - No 132 Vol 3 No 28 to Vol 3 No 52 (July 11 1840 - December 26 1840) Aug 15th 1840 missing. A rare volume of the journal which charts the most important period of railway history.
raised band(s) : On leather bound books, the ridges that protrude slightly from the spine.
gilt : Decorative patterns imbedded into the affected portion of a book. Often appears on the boards or the spine, and may be very simple, to elegant, to ludicrous.
title page : A page where the title of the book, the author's name and publication information usually appear.

4to : Or quarto. A term used generally to describe the approximate size of a book, a book that is about 10" to 12" tall and roughly squarish in shape. The term is based on the size of paper traditionally used by book printers which has been folded and cut into 16 pages.
